What is Corn Gluten?

Corn gluten feed is a mixture of corn bran, steep liquor, and maize germ oil that is obtained during the wet milling process of corn. Mostly made up of zine and gluten, maize gluten meal is the major protein found in corn (maize) endosperm. In the past, it was used as animal feed because it was a product of the processing of maize. True gluten, which is created when the proteins gliadin and gluten interact, is not present in maize gluten, despite the name.

Corn gluten meal is the principal protein of corn endosperm, consisting mainly of zine and gluten. It is produced by separating the starch and bran from the corn kernel and centrifuging the remaining protein fraction. It does not contain true gluten, which is formed by the interaction of gliadin and gluten in proteins in wheat, barley, and rye.

 

It is also a significant component of animal feed, providing energy, protein, and essential nutrients in animal diets. It is also used to make popular snacks like popcorn, corn nuts, and corn chips. It can be processed to extract the starch, which is then fermented to produce ethanol. Industrial uses include the production of adhesives, paper, textiles, and biodegradable plastics. Corn oil is used in cooking, salad dressings, and as a food ingredient, and corn syrup and sweeteners are used in a wide range of food and beverage products.
