Published on: 26th May 2023

After months of anticipation, the Lego Group yesterday opened the doors to its brand-new store in Battersea, London.

Located in the newly restored Battersea Power Station, the Lego store is already delighting fans of all ages, with an exciting collection of sets and experiences.

Lego fans from far and wide gathered at the opening to see the new features and displays. Customers were treated with extravagant builds and offers, whilst enjoying Lego product favourites such as Lego City, Lego Friends and Lego Ninjago, plus Lego retail exclusives such as Lego Disney The Little Mermaid and Lego Land Rover Defender 90 sets.

Paying homage to the local community, the new store showcases an intricate big build of Battersea Power Station which features 14,500 Lego bricks and took 160 hours to complete. Further still, a Lego brick mosaic wall conveys a stylised depiction of Battersea Power Station, using 108,291 bricks, and weighing 167kg. Ahead of its opening in 1955, the second stage of the of the construction of the Power Station was completed in 1948, so fittingly the design of the mural harks back to 1940s style tourism posters and features a stylised depiction of the Power Station along with a unique Minifigure of a child from the era bridging the areas of architecture, technology and play.

Users were guided to push a button on the console to activate sequential lighting and illuminate the bulb at the top of the console to represent the ‘spark of imagination’.

In addition, the new Lego store also features a range of experiences:

  • Pick a Brick wall – a great way for customers to select the exact elements that they require for their builds.
  • Build a Minifigure Tower – a variety of minifigure heads, hairpieces, torsos, legs and accessories available for guests to customise.
  • Hands-on play opportunities, including free build challenges and events each month.
  • Store Associates – whether visitors are picking out a gift, looking for the latest set or bringing in a Lego fan for a special treat, Brick Specialists can help find a set that’s the perfect fit.

To celebrate the opening of the new store, there are exclusive gifts with purchases as well as a Make & Take of Battersea Power Station which fans can build and take home for free (available on the 27th and 28th of May while stocks last).

Amy Pearson, director, EMEA Marketing at Lego Retail, said: “We’re always so excited to bring new Lego Stores to local communities and it’s been very special to open this one in the iconic Battersea Power Station. We’ve had a fantastic turn out already on opening day and we look forward to welcoming more Lego fans from across the capital and beyond to experience what the store has to offer, which includes brilliant Lego play experiences for all ages and a range of much-loved sets.”

Sam Cotton, head of Asset Management at Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC), said: “As the Lego Group’s first store south of the River Thames, there has been much excitement locally around this opening and it has been great to see so many people turn up to the launch to enjoy this new addition to the power station. The building’s presence throughout the store design with the big build of Battersea Power Station and interactive mosaic wall make it truly unique and a must visit for Lego fans of all ages.”
