Turns out that claims byBill Gates and other proprietary software loyalists that the Tuxsw_2 open-source movement is some sort of vaguely Marxist conspiracy may not have been so off the wall after all. Communists really do prefer Linux.

Cuba has now joined with Venezuela to convert the nation's PCs to Linux, calling it a matter of ideology and national security to rid the nations of Microsoft products.

Hector Rodriguez, who oversees open-source development at a major Cuban university, said the country was moving fast to wean itself off Windows. "Two years ago, the Cuban free-software community did not number more than 600 people" he said "In the last two years, that number has gone well beyond 3,000 users of free software, and its a figure that is growing exponentially."
