VAILS GATE – A two-story building with eight apartment units was heavily damaged by a three-alarm fire at 96 Vails Gate Heights Dr. Tuesday afternoon.

Assistant Chief Greg Lynady of the Vails Gate Fire Department said the first alarm was sounded just before 1:30 p.m.

Several people were home at the time and all managed to escape unhurt. There also were no injuries reported to firefighters.

Lynady said the building is not habitable.

Firefighters from New Windsor, the City of Newburgh, Coldenham, Washingtonville, Salisbury Mills and Cornwall responded to the scene to assist Vails Gate firefighters. Winona Lake and Cornwall-on-Hudson firefighters were on standby in Vails Gate’s quarters.

Firefighters were on the scene until 4:50 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
