Slaty-backed Gull is a primarily Asian species found in coastal eastern Russia, Japan, and Korea. It is regular in Alaska but rare and sought-after elsewhere in the U.S. Any state that doesn't have a record probably has this species its Top 5 most anticipated new species. We sure did!
Tim Carney found Maryland's first definitive SLATY-BACKED GULL on 1/14/2022 at Swan Creek DCMF in northern Anne Arundel County. Pending MD/DCRC review, this is expected to be the first accepted record for the state. At least one earlier record (Conowingo Dam, 1999) has potential for re-review in the future, as understanding of the species' identification increases.
