  1. An early New Year's gift and a wonderful farewell to Slovakia!
Thanks to great intel from some local birders, I was able to find my first winter roost of Long-eared owls! There were 16 of them hiding more or less effectively in 4 trees in this small village.
After unsuccessfully searching for them at 3 different places yesterday, this definitely made my day!

        1. Yes they really are some of my favorite birds. For the longest time I had very little luck with them, but in recent years, partly through increased searching for them and a lot thanks to reliable info from other birders, I've managed to see at least one owl on every trip! 3. From today's Facebook post:
The long-eared owl (Asio otus) has an impressive range that extends throughout much of the northern hemisphere. In some areas, they are nomadic and migrate in response to food availability. Despite being so widespread, they are more inconspicuous than many other owl species and can be difficult to spot, which is ironic considering they often roost in groups of a dozen or more! But, they have fantastic camouflage and can compress their feathers to resemble the trunk of a tree. Plus, they are not particularly vocal. They have the perfect features for a creature that wants to remain unseen! {Spotted in Slovakia by JungleDragon moderator, Thibaud Aronson} #JungleDragon #owl #LongearedOwl #Asiootus
