Well, he wanted to be famous

Charles Manson by Hourly History tells how Manson grew up, which was horrible and full of atrocities, and continues until his death. He was a monster. But was it genetic or his horrible upbringing? Guess we will never know but this book fills in my gap in knowledge of his early life.

Informative read!

In informative read that gives you a quick glimpse into the life of Charles Manson from being a product of his surrounding, a cult leader, murderer and then simply an old man. Really like reading this series.

This educational quarter I read the book Charles Manson: A Life from Beginning to End by Hourly History. This book is obviously about infamous criminal and cult leader (The Manson Family) Charles Manson. It discussed his early life and how a childhood with a horrible role model that’s in and out of the system affected his later life. It also discussed his tactics of recruitment into his cult in his later life, as well as detailing a motive and showing an in depth motive for the crimes the Manson Family committed.

This book is excellent. It kept me very engaged and interested in such a gloomy topic. It also shows the pop culture of the 60s and 70s which is really interesting to me.This book is also extremely informative and well researched. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about crime and cults.

Hourly History provides snippets of history that can be read in about an hour. Clearly, what we learned in school or read in the newspapers was not true history but a story that usually sounds better than reality. I remember the Charles Manson story in the newspapers, and I read HELTER SKELTER, by Bugliosi, twice. The Manson monster was part of my lived reality. All of that was nearly 50 years ago, and I have changed during that time from being 21, with much to learn, to being 71 and desiring to learn something new each and every day. Back in the day, the emphasis was on the sensational nature of the crimes. It is important to look beyond the sensationalism and deal with gritty reality.

This concise biography of Charles Manson, and his infamous family, provides new information that may or may not have been in Bugliosi's book (and other books written contemporaneously). If it was, that information was lost in a very long narrative of the multiple crimes and subsequent legal battles.

Of late, I am often surprised by how my reading of a book goes to the politics of the day… the never ending news cycle of corruption and lies. How does Charles Mansion fit into that mental framework? Manson is (and has been) portrayed as an institutionalized person with undoubted mental defects. I think we can all agree that he was not a mentally stable person. However, what if Manson had been born into money? What if he had enjoyed the benefit of wealth?

History should always speak to the future; our history is today's blueprint. It isn't necessary to go back hundreds of years to understand our origins. No doubt, Manson was a product of his time, but what does that mean for us today?

Charles Manson was a neglected child who spent his formative years in prison and reform schools.  When released, he went to live with his very religious aunt and uncle.  Charles married, had a son and wound up in jail.  While there, his wife divorced him and married another man to take care of her and Charles, Jr.  Interestingly, considering Charles' future, he was a virtual illiterate.  From age 12 until 26, Manson had spent most of his life in prison.

While in jail, Charles learned from pimps how to choose and manipulate women.  From the Carnegie Method (from the book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, a 4-week course offered to inmates), Charles learned how to use sex as a tool and exert control over women.  While in prison, another inmate offered to help Manson meet a recording mogul (Manson had started to play the guitar and sing).

When released from prison, Manson was unable to take care of himself.  This was the Summer of Love in San Francisco;  drugs and free sex were available everywhere.  He started a guru-act promising to lead followers to true enlightenment but only if they gave up their possessions and individuality and submitted to his will.

All of Charles Manson's notoriety was more than his son could handle.  At the age of 37, Charles Manson, Jr. (who had changed his name to Jay White) killed himself.  This book was fascinating because it showed how an illiterate nobody could control others to do his bidding, including killing innocent and random persons.  That is truly frightening.

Interesting

I read Helter Skelter a long time ago and when I seen this I really wanted to check it out. I have often wondered what turned Charlie into the man that he was. If he had not been brought into the life he was would things have been different? I found it interesting that there were things in here that I didn’t know. I liked how it talked more of Charlie and not just of him as the leader of the family. I also liked that it told us about Charlie’s first son, I do wish there would have been a bit more on him but hey what can you do. Overall anyone interested in learning more about this fascinating crazy man this is a read for you.

I very much enjoyed this One Hour biography of Charles Manson - it took a minimal amount of time to read through this man's life story. In retrospect, he was a troubled soul from the beginning, the unplanned/unwanted child of a 15-year old mother, he was incorrigible and quickly went from reform schools to prisons, spending the majority of his lifetime in these institutions before he began his public crusade of intimidation and manipulation of young women. One has to wonder what Society can do/should do to eliminate such "bad actors" before they can prey on innocent victims. Thankfully, his son (Charles Junior) killed himself before he could emulate the sins of his father.

Which was better? Helter Skelter the book or the movie? And, where does this Hourly History fit in? Vincent Bugliosi, who prosecuted The Manson Family, wrote one really interesting and informative book. And, the producers of the movie based on Bugliosi’s book, did and excellent job portraying Charles Manson, etc.
This Hourly History definitely fills in the additional information that was left out of the movie, and further clarified Manson’s wasted truth, is criminal record, andthe many opportunities missed by law enforcement to have put this lunatic behind bars much sooner than was actually accomplished.

Senselessness.

Early in Manson's life, the state of his mental health was known and ignored. HH touches on this part of his young life.

Manson could have remained anonymous had the courts intervened. Upon reading this, seeing his early life in cult-like situations, it's a wonder he didn't do more. Too little too late with his final prison sentence.

Recommend for sociological teachings. Don't bring children in the world if you don't want them.

May Manson's son rest in peace, and God grant him mercy.

Human debris

This was well written with only minor editing errors. It told the story without dragging it out. He chose to be evil, as most sociopaths do. The sad part is, many people lost their lives, literally and figuratively, because of this lab rat. Most people agree, the family members involved with the murders, most likely, would probably never have killed on their own. Petty crimes, possibly but not violent. We will never know.

Just a high level summary of already known information

If you have read anything else about Charles Manson then there is no need to read this book. If you are just getting started this is a good fairly high level introduction. I just didn't gain any new knowledge or find this to be the best book about him.

Cult Leader

Charlie Manson. The name alone strikes fear, terror, incredulity and in some; laughter. But still, so many know his name, or his Swastika carved visage. Charles Manson wanted fame and ultimately found infamy. This book, is a good start in understanding the sick and twisted mind of Charles Manson and his, "family."

Factual

Manson was not successfully famous but infamous. I remember knowing (I was only 11) Sharon Tate was a beautiful blonde very pregnant actress randomly murdered. Siting the ordinariness of the murderers, I hate to be amazed I was in an ordinary family in 1970. But DRUGS and mental illness is a notorious destruction.

Pretty good

This book was informative but also pretty basic, kinda like a summary of what happened. I think Paul Watkins book was the best, he was deep in the family and had extensive knowledge of Manson, this was like a quick overview with not much new info at all. Still a good read for any True Crime fans.

I like that in this book, the whole extensive life of Charles Manson is told in less than 50 pages. Of course, it’s the same information as seen in interviews or movies. But I really appreciate the format of this book!

Fairly detailed for a short read.

Manson is an individual that could be written about for years and no one would ever understand him. Thankfully, this book doesn't attempt to make anyone understand Manson & his crimes. The book lays out the facts in chronological order.

Nice summary

For a novice like myself who only knew small pieces of who Manson was, this was a great high level summary of the Manson family and a little background into who he was.

May Charles Manson Be Burning in Hell for All Eternity!

Charles Manson was not punished for his crimes as he should have been because had spend half of his life in prisons before the murders. I believe he should have been crucified and his remains cut up and feed to zoo animals.

Should have been a magazine article

Nothing new, no further insight into Manson or his family. Read the entire book in an hour. I'm glad it was free, otherwise I'd be really perturbed if I paid for it.

A good detailed book

This book was very well written and had very good information about Charles Manson. He was a very sick man that slipped through the system to cause much destruction of life and emotions.

This short book gives an understanding of the life of Manson and his mindset when commiting his crime spree. It also allows you to get a brief history of his crimes should you wish to look into getting a book that chronicals his life and crimes in greater details.

Good Insight into the mind of a osychopath

This was clearly a disturbed man who managed to ruin the lives of others. It gives insight into the mind of a narcissistic psychopath.

Interesting reading!

For a short book, it was very interesting to read. Unbelievable that this man had such an affect on a group of people.
