Yes, and that’s what sources from the UK say! As per reports by MCN and Visor Down, Yamaha is not updating its litre-class motorcycles, the R1 and R1M to meet Euro 5+ emissions, meaning the motorcycles will not be sold for street use any more.
An official spokesperson told MCN, “Yamaha Motor Group have taken the decision not to develop an EU5+ version of the R1 or R1M instead focussing on other mid-term business and product strategies that will provide future opportunities.”
Since its launch in 1998, the Yamaha R1 has seen major updates, the biggest being in 2015 when Yamaha gave the R1 an updated design that we know today, while also introducing electronic aids. The last update the motorcycles got was in 2020 when they became Euro 5-compliant.
While it may seem to be the end of the road for the Yamaha R1 in the UK and other countries, the motorcycle maker will continue to sell the R1 in less stringent countries globally for road use, while the R1 could still live on as a track-only machine globally, similar to the R6.
