Spring has sprung! (Ish! Unless it’s still 30 degrees where you’re living! Then ignore me!) And with a new season comes a new hairstyle, right? Right. This week on The Braid Up, we’re getting a little crazy and trying out something new: a mohawk puff. But don’t be scared—this one doesn’t involve shaving off all your hair. Instead, our braider extraordinaire, Stasha Harris, shows us exactly how to get this protective style without buzzing your hair.

Ready to try out this look? Grab a friend (those teeny-tiny braids are no joke) and check out these pro tips.

1. Get your holy-grail product, aka edge control. You’re going to need a lot of it to keep your edges laid and your parts slick. Try African Pride Black Castor Miracle Extra Hold Braid, Loc, and Twist Gel or Shine ’n Jam Magic Fingers Gel to keep even your smallest of baby hairs in place.

2. Make sure your hair is parted perfectly. The parts are a major key to this look. The one tool that’ll help you achieve them? A rat-tail comb. The fine teeth of the comb will make sure your parts are so sharp, they could kill.

3. Puff it up. You’re going to need long AF hair extensions to make the mohawk puff of your dreams come to life. Don’t forget bobby pins and rubber bands! You’ll need them to secure your hair in place and to separate the hair extensions into sections.

And you’re set! Be sure to watch the video, and get ready to wear this look all season long.
