Key information

The red-necked phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) is a small wader which breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. These birds are blue-gray with a reddish wash on the neck; in winter they are a streaky gray on the back, white below, with a bold black patch across the eye.

Length : 17–20 cm

Wingspan: 32-41 cm

Weight : 20-48g

Population : The overall population trend is decreasing, although some populations have unknown trends

Habitat: found in areas of lakes and rivers

Diet: chiefly insects, especially dipteran flies and their larvae, as well as beetles, caddisflies, ants and bugs
