Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs said in an interview with the Latvian State Radio today: the Government's plans to increase the property tax rate for those landlords, who own idle land, will prompt them to consider the ways rationally use their property, informs LETA.

There are large areas in Latvia where no economic or farming activity takes place, said Duklavs. He went on to say that this land must be put to use, although it is hard to say currently what crops would be in demand a year later.

Duklavs informed that he is planning to visit Rezekne in the near future, where many farmers are planning to develop flax production.

If well organized, this business could have good prospects because flax is in great demand in Europe, said Duklavs.

Duklavs also said that he would strongly oppose any proposals to increase the taxes on land and buildings that are used in production or farming. The new tax is meant as an incentive for farmers and businessmen to make good use of land that is currently idle, he explained.
