Sovereign of the Skies: Litho of The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), 1927

About the Item

This print from the "Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade" series captures the formidable presence of the Peregrine Falcon, or "Pilgrimsfalk" in Swedish, known scientifically as Falco peregrinus. The falcon stands with a commanding gaze atop a rugged outcrop, rendered in fine detail that accentuates its status as one of the most revered birds of prey. The artist has meticulously illustrated the falcon’s distinctive plumage, with slate-gray feathers covering the back and wings, each feather edged with a subtle lighter hue, creating a sleek and aerodynamic appearance. The bird's underparts are a contrasting light cream, speckled with dark spots, indicative of the species' classic patterning. Notable is the peregrine's sharp, hooked beak, a telltale sign of its predatory lifestyle, and the yellow orbital ring and cere, which stand out against its dark head, giving it a fierce expression. Its powerful yellow talons are poised for action, indicative of its prowess as a hunter. The attention to detail extends to the rocky base upon which the falcon stands, suggesting its preference for high perches that offer a wide view of its territory. The background is minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the bird's imposing figure and the subtle interplay of color and shadow across its feathers. Preserved in excellent condition, the print's colors are vibrant, and the paper is free of noticeable wear, highlighting the enduring quality of this lithographic work. This piece captures not just the physical attributes of the Peregrine Falcon, but also the spirit of this avian predator, celebrated for its speed and hunting prowess. This is an original and NOT a reproduction!
