Gilbert Garcin. Existential questions in photography

The French conceptual photographer Gilbert Garcin is a “late prodigy” as he started his work after he retired, when he was 65 years old. His surreal and philosophical manner of expression got him almost instant worldwide recognition; numerous art and photography critics associate him with Magritte, one of the most known surreal painters, and Eugen Ionesco, important figure in the theater of absurd.

His manner of discussing about the human condition and the comical absurdity of our everyday life has something of the two artists mentioned above, but Garvin’s work is quite unique, as he puts himself in the character he refers to as Mr. Everybody, a man dressed in an overcoat who invites us to laugh our solitude and pointless efforts away.
