Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré : Surrealism and Photography : Imagine – around Gilbert Garcin

Preview

Appearing after the First World War, the surrealist movement reflected a time when art and imagination became a means of escape. By its ability to freeze the image, photography was naturally a part of this movement. Today, after the pandemic and with the conflicts in the world today, this need for imagination is essential. In fashion, in museums, in new technologies, the legacy of surrealism is more present than ever.

As we live in a moment where fiction often meets reality, where reality itself is superimposed on dreams, the images of 20th century artists come back to us and encourage us to reflect.

Under the guise of Mister G, inspired by Tati’s Monsieur Hulot, Gilbert Garcin managed with his visual aphorisms to find a happy medium between reality and fiction. Helio wanted to pay tribute to this unique photographer, who passed away in 2020, in an exhibition bringing together his works and those of artists inspired by surrealism. Photomontages, collages, superpositions, photographs without a camera… so many means to offer new keys to read the world, new gateways to the unknown and the dream.

Around the photographs of Gilbert Garcin: the surrealist photographs of Willy Del ZOPPO, Daniel LIÉNARD, Louise NARBO, Ayline OLUKMAN, François PARMENTIER, Sabine PIGALLE, Patrick RIMOND, Myriam RISPENS. The photo testimony of Gilbert Garcin’s friends: Fred PEREIRA, Bernard PLOSSU, Christian RAMADE, Olivier REYNAUD. The film Le Cabanon de mister G. by Rima SAMMAN & Patrick LE BESCONT.
