What is Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)?
Avoid the DM Trap

First of all, all LeMitri's corgis are DM-free, meaning they will not get the disease. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a genetic, incurable, fatal disease that affects the spinal cord in Corgis, leading to full paralysis of back legs, affecting walking, scratching, going potty etc. It typically affects older Corgis at the age of 9 or older. In the beginning, the disease is manageable with the use of a dog wheelchair. This is so common that the term "Corgi on Wheels" has become very popular, leading to online communities and websites dedicated to affected dogs. All LeMitri's Pembroke Welsh Corgis are genetically tested to make sure that none of our puppies will be affected by Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). All our pups are "Clear by Parentage", and we provide you with a copy of genetic testing results so that you have peace of mind. Learn about it more in our "Corgi DM and its implications" article.

Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet is important for any dog, including corgis in San Antonio. Corgis have a tendency to overeat, which can lead to obesity and other health problems. It's crucial to monitor their food intake and ensure they're not consuming too many calories. Providing a balanced and nutritious diet with appropriate portion sizes is key to keeping your corgi healthy. Treats should be given in moderation, and it's important to avoid human food that may be harmful to them. Regular exercise is also important in preventing obesity. By maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine, you can keep your corgi happy, healthy, and active in San Antonio.

Maintenance

Grooming and maintaining your corgi's haircoat is essential, especially in San Antonio's hot climate. The double coat of a corgi can protect them from cold weather, but it can also be problematic in warm weather, leading to overheating and other issues. Regular brushing and bathing can help keep your corgi's coat healthy and free from matting or tangles. It's also important to keep your corgi well-hydrated and in cool, shaded areas during hot weather to avoid heatstroke. By taking proper care of your corgi's coat and ensuring they stay cool in the Texas heat, you can help keep them healthy and happy.
