I interpret this image as a reflection on life’s hardships and how important friends and family are in getting you through those difficulties. I believe it is saying that when life gets tough, you need a friend to support you and take some of the weight otherwise you will just fall through the gap into an empty pit of doom. I think it’s also about having a balance in a relationship. You need your friends just as much as they need you too. Life is about supporting each other and looking after one another. Everyone needs a companion. Life is too hard to go it alone.
Parts of this photograph are almost repeated, such as the white blocks with a railing on, which is why it is almost symmetrical. Perhaps Garcin is also trying to portray that we are all the same in the end. We all have struggles in our lives. We are all standing on a mountain of worries and troubles which is why it’s important to support each other.
