This breeding plumaged White-winged Tern was a very unexpected find when discovered by local birder Paul Linegar on August 19. It is normally found in southeastn Europe and Asia (wintering in in Africa and Australia), and is a very rare wanderer to North America.

Status: Very Rare (< 5 records)

Origins: Breeds mainly in eastern Europe and Asia, wintering in Africa and Australia.

Record Details: One record for Newfoundland. A breeding plumaged adult was first spotted at a yacht club in Long Pond, Conception Bay South on August 19, 2015. It was subsequently spotted both there and at a nearby coastal pond in Chamberlains until August 28, 2015.
